Biography

Emeritus Professor at Université Lumière Lyon 2, I have rooted my entire career as a teacher and researcher in this institution. My career has been marked by a constant commitment to dialogue across disciplines — building bridges between data engineering and the questions raised by the humanities and social sciences.

My research has focused for over twenty-five years on data mining, machine learning and knowledge extraction from large databases. I helped structure this community in France and across the French-speaking world, notably by co-founding the Extraction et Gestion des Connaissances association (EGC) and the Revue des Nouvelles Technologies de l'Information (RNTI).

On the teaching side, I designed and led several curricula dedicated to data science, including an international Erasmus Mundus Master in data mining (now closed) that trained a generation of researchers and practitioners.

I have successively headed the ERIC research lab at Lyon 2, the Institute of Human Sciences — MSH Lyon-Saint-Étienne, then the digital department of the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF). At AUF I led the IDNEUF initiative (Initiative for Digital Development in French-speaking Higher Education), supporting member institutions in their digital transformation.

Today, I devote a growing share of my time to reflecting on the relationship between scientific knowledge, reason, and public debate — work that has recently led to a book and the companion site laïciScope.
